Prof. Ido Roll

Ido Roll is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education in Science and Technology at the Technion. Previously, he was the Director of the Institute for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at the University of British Columbia in Canada. Ido studies how interactive learning environments support students in becoming better scientists. His research utilizes a variety of methodologies from the fields of education, learning analytics, cognitive science, and human-computer interaction. Ido graduated from Carnegie Mellon University. He is a Steering Committee member of Learning at Scale, an Executive Committee member of the International Artificial Intelligence in Education Society, and the Chair of the PISA Innovative Domains Expert Group.

Ido’s research is in the intersection of:

  • Learning Analytics – How can we use students’ digital traces to better understand and support learning?

  • Learning Design – How can we build instruction that empowers learners and facilitate them to become better scientists?

  • Learning Sciences – How does this work enrich our understanding of the nature of human learning, and especially, learning to learn?

In more detail:

I study how interactive learning environments can support students in becoming better learners and scientists, focusing on the development of scientific literacies, creativity, and sense making. My research is rooted in frameworks and methodologies from education, physics, cognitive science, learning analytics, and human-computer interaction. My work focuses on different time scales, from minutes (in problem solving environments and simulations) to months (in MOOCs and learning management systems). Together with instructors, we study how innovative pedagogies and technologies can be implemented at scale and have meaningful impact on learning. This focus can be summarized by three types of learning: analytics, design, and sciences.
